Rereading Feels Like Learning. A Washington University Experiment Shows It Isn't.
One group read a passage about 14 times. Another read it 3.4 times and then tested themselves on it. A week later the rereaders remembered 40% of the material and the self-testers remembered 61%. The rereaders were also the most confident they would do well. Here is what four decades of memory research says about why the study method that feels productive is usually the weakest one you can pick.
The Experiment You Should Know About Before You Study Anything Again
In 2006, Henry Roediger and Jeffrey Karpicke at Washington University in St. Louis ran an experiment that is quietly devastating if you have ever prepared for anything by reading it over and over.
They gave 180 undergraduates a short prose passage on a general science topic. Then they split them into three groups, all of whom got exactly the same amount of time with the material: four periods of five minutes each.
The first group read the passage in all four periods. They got through it an average of 14.2 times.
The second group read it in three periods, then took one recall test where they wrote down everything they could remember. They read it 10.3 times.
The third group read it once, then took three consecutive recall tests. They only got through the passage 3.4 times.
Nobody in any group received feedback on their tests. Nobody got to check their answers. The testing groups simply tried to pull the material out of their own heads.
The Result
Five minutes later, the rereaders looked like the winners. They recalled 83% of the passage's idea units. The single-test group got 78%. The triple-test group came last at 71%.
One week later, the ranking inverted completely. The triple-test group recalled 61%. The single-test group recalled 56%. The rereaders, who had read the passage more than four times as often as anyone else, recalled 40%.
Put the forgetting side by side and it gets starker. Over that week, the rereading group lost 52% of what they had known. The single-test group lost 28%. The triple-test group lost 14%.
Roediger and Karpicke ran a second version with 120 students and a longer window, and the same pattern held. After five minutes, restudying beat testing (81% versus 75%). After two days, testing won (68% versus 54%). After a week, testing won again (56% versus 42%). One detail is worth sitting with: the group that took a single test recalled as much after a full week as the rereading group did after only two days. Taking one test bought roughly five extra days of memory.
The Uncomfortable Part
Here is the finding that makes this more than a study-skills tip.
At the end of the learning session, before anyone knew how they would do, the researchers asked every student to rate on a seven-point scale how well they thought they would remember the passage in a week.
The rereaders rated themselves 4.8. The single-test group said 4.2. The triple-test group said 4.0.
The group that was most confident performed the worst. The group that was least confident performed the best. Their confidence was not just wrong, it was inverted.
That is not a quirk of one experiment. It is the core problem with judging your own learning by how learning feels. Rereading produces a sensation of fluency. The words go down easily, you recognise every sentence, and recognition feels a lot like knowing. Retrieval produces the opposite sensation. You stare at a blank page, you struggle, you come up with less than you hoped, and you conclude the method is failing you. The struggle is the mechanism.
Robert Bjork, the UCLA psychologist who has spent a career on this, calls these desirable difficulties: conditions that slow down learning in the moment and improve retention over time. Roediger and Karpicke explicitly place their results in that tradition. Testing was harder. That was the point.
This Is Not One Study
If it were a single result, it would be a curiosity. It is not.
In 2013, John Dunlosky, Katherine Rawson, Elizabeth Marsh, Mitchell Nathan and Daniel Willingham published a 55-page review in Psychological Science in the Public Interest that graded ten common learning techniques for how well the evidence supports them. Their conclusion is worth quoting in spirit: the techniques most students actually use, including underlining, rereading, and mnemonic devices, came out as surprisingly low utility. They were hard to implement well and produced inconsistent gains. The two that earned a high utility rating were practice testing and distributed practice, meaning spreading study sessions out over time instead of massing them.
In 2011, Karpicke and Janell Blunt published a result in Science comparing retrieval practice against elaborative studying with concept mapping, a method that looks far more sophisticated than a quiz. Retrieval practice produced more learning. The advantage showed up on questions requiring comprehension and inference, not just recall of facts. It even showed up when the final test was building a concept map.
And in 2009, Karpicke, Andrew Butler and Roediger surveyed 177 college students about how they actually study. The majority reported rereading their notes or textbook. Relatively few reported testing themselves. The most effective technique available to them was also one of the least used.
What This Looks Like in Practice
None of this requires an app or a system. Four changes cover most of the value.
Close the book and write. After reading anything you want to keep, put it away and write down what you remember from memory. Bullet points are fine. This one move converts passive reading into retrieval. If it feels like you produced less than you learned, that is the experiment working, not you failing.
Test before you feel ready. The instinct is to review until you feel confident, then test. Reverse it. Testing while you still feel shaky is where the retention is generated. Confidence built by rereading is, as the data above shows, not informative.
Space it out. Distributed practice was the other high-utility technique in the Dunlosky review. Three twenty-minute sessions across a week will beat one hour tonight, even though tonight feels more productive.
Do not wait for feedback to start. In both Roediger and Karpicke experiments, the testing groups got no feedback at all and still won by wide margins after a delay. Feedback improves things further, but the act of retrieval carries the effect on its own. You do not need a perfect answer key to begin.
Why This Belongs Here
A growth mindset is often reduced to believing you can improve. The more useful version is knowing which effort actually produces improvement, because effort is not interchangeable.
Fourteen readings of a passage is real effort. It is also a poor investment, and the reason people keep making it is that it feels good while producing very little. Three self-tests is less pleasant, less time on task, and roughly 50% more retained a week later. If you treat difficulty as a signal that something is wrong, you will systematically choose the weaker method for the rest of your life.

Recognition is not recall. Reading a page again teaches you that you have seen the page, which is a different skill from being able to produce what was on it. The research is old, replicated, and consistent: the version of study that feels like it is going badly is usually the version that works.

Why does rereading feel more effective than testing yourself?
Rereading produces fluency. The material goes down easily and every sentence looks familiar, and familiarity feels a lot like knowing. Retrieval feels worse because you face a blank page and produce less than you hoped. In the 2006 Roediger and Karpicke experiment the group that reread most rated their expected one-week recall highest, at 4.8 out of 7, and then recalled the least, at 40%. Confidence built by rereading is not a reliable signal of what you have actually retained.
Do you need to check your answers for retrieval practice to work?
No. In both Roediger and Karpicke experiments the testing groups received no feedback at all and still outperformed the rereading groups by wide margins on delayed tests, by 14 percentage points after a week in one case and 21 in the other. Is retrieval practice only useful for memorising facts?
No. Karpicke and Blunt's 2011 study in Science found that retrieval practice beat elaborative studying with concept mapping on test questions that required comprehension and inference, not just factual recall.
